eBike Services. You can either build your own eBike (with some free advice and guidance from us) or we can convert your old bike for a small fee. We want to encourage people to recycle unused bikes, get some exercise and reduce the pollution in and around Henley.
We can pick up deliver for a small charge if necessary. If you want to buy, rent or repair a production/branded eBike then try Henley Cycles in Duke St, Henley or AW cycles in Caversham (nothing to do with us, but we have found them helpful!) We are not in the business of general bike repair. We assume the bike is in decent working order before fitting a kit (but obviously we will do things like adjust brakes and point out any parts that need replacing). If you need someone in Henley to fix or service a pedal bike then try Roger Cole, 37 Valley Rd, on 07974402292 rogerc@dtwo.co.uk We have found the Chinese motors and batteries to be pretty reliable. There is not much to fix on them, but we are happy to see if we can fix anything that goes wrong. We are not targeting the serious off-road or "MAMIL" market, more suited to a branded more expensive eBike with better geometry and a mid drive motor. |
Advice and GuidanceIf you want to do the conversion yourself then I am happy to advise you for free on what parts you need and how to do the conversion. My objective is to encourage eBike use in Henley and not really to make a profit. This is really more of a hobby for me.
Bring your bike round and I'll let you know what is possible. Depending on demand there may be a waiting list - I only have the space to do a couple of bikes at a time. Fixing electric motorsI can help diagnose and try and fix issues with ebike electric motors. One issue I have seen and fixed are slipping magnets. At high torque the magnets slip around the outer casing (feels like a slipping clutch). This can be fixed by epoxying the magnets back in place and running the motor to force the epoxy into the back of the magnets. Also worth applying new Lithium grease whilst the case is open.

Try one out first! If you want to try out a an ebike that we have already converted then come and have a go. We have a test bike that you can try out.
You will then have an idea of whether it is something you would use and whether you want to do the conversion yourself. For most people a 250w front wheel hub motor with a 10ah or 15ah battery is the best option. |
ConversionMostly the installation of a kit is straightforward for someone with basic DIY skills, but I have found that there is usually a bit of light engineering required.
- Fixing existing problems with the base bike - Mounting of battery (may need some drilling / plates made, even a bit of welding) - Fitting torque arms to prevent the frame/forks being bent. - Location of controller and wiring routing - Fitting new brake levers. - Fitting any additional components (USB charging ports, GPS tracker, lights, speedometers, racks, sidestands etc) - Making C washers and minor filing down frames - Adjusting brakes, gears etc. |
